The Hay-Adams: voorportaal voor The White House
President-elect Barack Obama is begin dit jaar vertrokken uit zijn woonplaats Chicago om bijna 1000 km verderop zijn intrek te nemen in Washington DC. En nee, er was nog geen plaats voor hem in het Witte Huis (de gastenvleugel was al bezet), maar hij en zijn gezin konden terecht in een bijzonder exclusief hotel aan het Lafayette Square: The Hay-Adams. Dit vijfsterren-deluxe hotel ligt recht tegenover het Witte Huis en dus kan Obama letterlijk en figuurlijk wennen aan dit uitzicht.
Het Hay-Adams hotel (lid van The Leading Hotels of the World) is op zich ook al een paleisje en wordt in Washington de ‘grande dame’ van de hotels genoemd. Sinds zijn opening in 1928 heeft het hotel dertien aanstaande presidenten te gast gehad, niet op de laatste plaats vanwege dat uitzonderlijke uitzicht.
Het hotel is vernoemd naar John Hay en Henry Adams. John was de persoonlijk medewerker van Abraham Lincoln (en later minister van Binnenlandse Zaken) en zowel Henry’s vader als grootvader waren presidenten van de Verenigde Staten.
Op Expedia (een site waar je nogal eens koopjes kunt treffen) krijgt het hotel een goed rapportcijfer (4,5/5). Prijzen beginnen bij $ 389,- op een rustige dag en op $ 565,- als het wat drukker is (de week voor de inauguratie van Barak Obama zit het hotel volledig vol). Toch is niet iedereen even happy daar: “This is a classic hotel with a great location, but to me it wasn’t worth the money. Service and conditions are great, but the very high price for a small, cramped room with no view whatsoever is too much.”
Kamer mét uitzicht ...
Duidelijk een gast die niet aan de voorkant van het hotel een kamer kreeg. En omdat negatieve reacties de leukste zijn, hier nog een:
“My wife and I travel very often. We’ve been to many hotels and heard great things about Hay Adams. The hotel was nothing like we’ve heard. We were very impressed with the attention to details in our room for about five minutes, until we found half empty bottles of juice in the mini bar. Then, we began to question the cleanliness of the room. When we called the front desk to ask if the room had been cleaned, they didn’t respond very politely. The free internet connection did not work half of the time and the thermostat wasn’t operating. The room was freezing cold. Once, the housekeeping tried to get in the room at 9:30 PM after a short knock, while we were already sleeping. During breakfast, which cost close to $100, I found dried up tomato paste stains on my napkin. I was expecting much more from a five star hotel.”
Voor de balans ook nog twee positieve:
“I don’t impress easily, but this hotel did it. I’m still talking about staying there a week later. The staff was always courteous and prompt in attending to our needs. It was the little things that count: fresh chocolate chip cookie and apples in the lobby, bottled water as you leave to tour D.C. each day, night time turn down service included a weather report for the next day, soft music, and slippers at your bed so your feet don’t have to touch the floor. This historic hotel is well worth the price you pay, you will not be disappointed.”
En dus nog één:
“This is a 5 star full service hotel across from the white house. If its a nice day and if you dont mind the exercise, you can walk just about everywhere. There is a trolley service that is a little pricy but has a stop nearby that goes to every museum and monument in DC. We used it one day but found a taxi made more sense to us because we tended to stay at each museum for a long time and could walk to others then grab a cab home for dinner. But back to the hotel - it's great and I travel all the time - mostly staying at Marriotts and Hiltons. You cant go wrong here- everything is VERY classy. The rooms are completely remodeled, beautifully I might add, and it has a total Washington vibe. There was even a Bose CD player with a bunch of CDs to pick from in the room. The bathroom is impeccable. The beds are great. Book your room and enjoy the sites ...”
Nog een paar aardige weetjes:
· het hotel is slechts 200 passen verwijderd van het Witte Huis;
· het Hay-Adams was het eerste hotel in Washington DC met airconditioning in de dinerruimte (1930). Het Witte Huis kreeg dat drie jaar later;
· het hotel heeft 23 kamers meer dan het 143 kamers tellende Witte Huis
· tijdens de regeerperiode van Ronald Reagan kreeg het echtpaar Reagan steeds weer een rekening als binnenshuis gegeten werd, als ze gebruik maakten van een stomerij of als een beroep gedaan werd op de toiletartikelen via house keeping van het Witte Huis. Onze ‘bathroom amenities’ zijn gratis, merkt het Hay Adams op.
